D.H. Scrubby Tech Tip: Will the Internet stop working July 9?

Glora's husband fancies himself a writer and a technology enthusiast (code for "likes expensive toys"). As a guest writer for Glora's Crafts, he writes articles which might be interesting to the crafting and blogging community.

You may have heard a rumor going around that FBI is going to shut down the Internet on July 9.

While that is probably not true for most people, the Internet may go dark for some people because the FBI will turn off a certain server on that date.

Maybe I better explain from the beginning.

In 2007, a sophisticated virus called DNSChanger was released and quickly infected millions of computers. The malware would reroute your requests to view a webpage to hacker-created websites, where cyber-criminals made at least $14 million in showing online advertisements. (Who says advertizing doesn't pay?) DNSChanger also prevents infected computers from updating or using anti-virus software, leaving them vulnerable to even more malicious software.

Forward to November 2011: The FBI arrested six Estonian nationals (yes, I had to look up Estonia too) and seized the servers where infected users were being redirected. Because of the number of users who were unknowingly being directed through these servers, a court order instructed the FBI put up surrogate servers in place of the malicious ones so as not to disrupt the Internet service for millions.

That court order runs out on July 9. When the servers come down, infected computers will no longer find the Internet.

So, how can you know if you are infected with DNSChanger?

Visit this FBI website: https://forms.fbi.gov/check-to-see-if-your-computer-is-using-rogue-DNS. Click one of the links at the bottom of the page (appropriate to the language you speak). You'll know instantly.

If you are infected, how can you fix it?

Unfortunately, the program is a rootkit type of virus, which means it buries itself deep into the system, requiring intensive work to get rid of it. The safest course is to back up your important data, reformat your hard drive(s), and reinstall your operating system (easier said than done).

If you want to attempt removal on your own, several antivirus companies have released free removal utilities. One example includes Kapersky Labs free rootkit removal tool.

Good luck, and may the Internet stay on for you!

Comments are always welcome - however, please understand that I cannot provide technical support for your situation. If you run into trouble, seek out professional assistance (that is, invite the neighborhood nerd over and offer him a doughnut).

MCT Scrappy Monday Layout

Hello friends. It is time for another Scrappy Monday at My Creative Time. We were asked to make a layout of any size and include ONE picture (I totally messed up and left a spot for two pictures and didn't realize I had messed up until I was finished and didn't have time to make something else). We were also asked to include buttons.

The basic idea for this layout came about when Emma's What's Growing On stamp set came out. I couldn't help but think of how much a pregnant woman grows (especially in the 3rd Trimester).

Here is a little closer look at this cute 3rd Trimester image that comes from the 9 Months Cricut Lite cartridge. I had a super sweet bloggy friend give it to me as a gift and I'm SO in love with it! THANK YOU!

The face on the girl is made using the Funshine Faces Side View stamp set by Peachy Keen Stamps. I also added a button and some hemp from Liz's Paper Loft Boutique.

Here is a closer looks at the removable journaling tag:

This tag slides in and out. That way I can put the details of how much growth was happening without EVERYONE who looks at the scrapbook seeing the details. For the tag I used Emma's XL Label Die, for the stitching her XL Label Border stamps, and for the sentiment What's Growing On?

And last of all here is a close up of the scale:

This scale is also a cut from the 9 Months Cricut Lite cartridge. The sweet little baby feet and the 'weight' sentiment come from My Creative Time's All Star Baby stamp set.

Make sure to stop by Emma's blog and see what she and the other DT members did using ONLY ONE picture and buttons. Have a great Memorial Day. Hugs- Glora

For my project I made a fun and simple tag.

The beautiful tag is a new die by My Creative Time called Tag Dies. The sentiments are both by My Creative Time. They are called Have Fun in the Sun and This and That! The sweet little sunshine stamp is by Peachy Keen Stamps (You Are My Sunshine), you can also purchase some Action Wobbles there and at the Queen's Royal Shoppe. I LOVE Basketball

Today I have a basketball card to share with you. I shared this on Everyday Cricut a while back but have not shared it here. This is a double sided tri-fold card that I designed in my Gypsy. You definitely don't have to do these double sided but I thought it made the card extra fun.

For this card I used the Sports Mania Cricut cartridge and the Everyday Paper Doll Cricut cartridge. Here is what the card looks like all closed up:

The small basketball and #1 player are both from stamp sets by My Creative Time. The #1 is from her Sports Sentiments stamp set and the basketball is from her Slam Dunk stamp set. The face on the paperdoll is a stamp by Peachy Keen Stamps called Simple Simons.

When you open the top flap (which is the basketball player) this is what you see:

The basketball and the clipboard are both from the Sports Mania cartridge and the basketball player and his accessories are from the Everyday Paper Doll cartridge.

Then when you open the second flap, which is the basketball, this is what you will see:

The slam dunk sentiment and smaller basketball are from the Slam Dunk stamp set and the I {heart} basketball and #1 stamps come from the Sports Sentiments stamp set by My Creative Time and this face is also a Simple Simon face stamp by Peachy Keen Stamps.

I have made one other double sided tri-fold card in the past and if you are interested in taking a look at it I will leave you a link below:

MCT May Release Day #4

Hi and welcome to day four of projects from Emma's newest stamp and die release over at My Creative Time. ALL of these stamps and dies are already available for order.

Today we are all using Celebrate Good Times. This is the ultimate adorable birthday stamp and die set. I LOVE it SO much. I know I will be using it over and over again!

I thought this set worked perfectly for my nephew's birthday card. I stamped each word of Make a Wish separately to make little sentiment banners down the side. I love how it turned out and will probably be trying that again. I cut out one of the awesome Tag Dies from this release and then embossed the tag with the Mickey Celebrates Cuttlebug embossing folder. I used to white chalk ink to make the embossing pop. I added a Mickey Icon eyelet that I got from Disneyland to the top of the tag and some faux stitching around the edges and I was done. This actually turned out to be a super quick and simple card, but my "masculine/boy" cards tend to be a little more simple.

This wouldn't be a party without GIVEAWAYS!
With all of our SAMPLES/ SNEAKS this week, Emma likes to do some FUN giveaways!
